| Make It Work - Science Books |
|
This series received the American Institute of Physics award
for Best
Science Writing for Children |
| The Make it Work books all have 48 pages
plus soft cover. Eight pages are used for title page, index, glossary
and index. The remaining forty pages present twenty different science
experiments, each in lavishly and colorfully illustrated two-page spreads.
Collectively, they explore virtually every aspect of the subject, but one or
more can easily form the basis for a school science project. All of
the experiments utilize things found around the house or ones that can be
easily acquired. The more simple experiments are suitable for
elementary grade children, but others deal with complex concepts or require
building skills, making them more suitable for junior high and high school
students. Below, we've shown three typical two-page spreads.

Make it Work:
Time
The book begins with a discussion of the Concept of Time, then provides experiments to
demonstrate Night and Day, the Solar Year, Calendars, the Effect of Longitude, Time Zones,
Latitude, Sundials, Universal Sundials, Time at Night, Recording Time, Timetables, Time
Capsules, Geological Time, Order and Disorder, Light from the Stars, Time Twins, and four
experiments demonstrating the evolution of clocks: Candle, Clocks, Water Clocks,
Pendulum Clocks, and Electronic Clocks. The above shows how to construct a simple
water clock. As water drips into the glass, it fills, causing the cork to rise.
As it does, it changes the angle of the time pointer. Simple but effective. |

Make it Work -
Dinosaurs
The introduction discussing "Being a Scientist." It is followed by
experiments dealing with geological time, finding fossils, The Dinosaur World, What is a
Dinosaur?, Digging up Dinosaurs, The Skeleton, Dinosaur Skulls, Legs and Posture, Four
Legs or Two? Means of Attack, Dinosaur Defense, Dinosaur Speed, the Largest
Dinosaurs, Body Temperature, Dinosaur Nests, Dinosaur Brains, Plesiosaurs, Pterosaurs, and
the Great Extinction. The above project is one we haven't seen before, but find most
informative. It involves using newspaper and plaster to recreate the three
geological time eras in which dinosaurs lived: the Triassic (hot, dry, and vast deserts);
the Jurassic (warm with lush vegetation) and the Cretaceous (warm with volcanoes in some
areas.) |

Make It Work -
Electricity
Switches are used to turn electrical circuits off and on. The above experiment
requires making four types: simple switch, pressure switch, tapper switch and a dimmer
switch. Other experiments deal with Static Electricity, Simple Circuits, Batteries,
Lighthouse, Complex Circuits, Light Bulbs, Circuit Game, Morse Code, Magnetism, Magnetic
Power, Magnetic Boats, Magnetic Earth, Magnetic Fields, Electromagnetism, Making a Motor,
Working Motor, Electric Train, and Boosting Power. |
